We helped Polar build a world-class, easy-to-use mobile app experience for their popular polling platform.
Story
In 2013 we were contacted by the founders of Polar, Luke Wroblewski and Jeff Cole. Luke was previously Chief Design Architect at Yahoo! and Jeff was previously the co-founder/CTO of PatientsLikeMe. Fresh off securing a seed round, they were looking for a team to help speed up their initial product development and take ownership of their iOS app to create a world-class mobile experience.
We did just that. Over nine months we delivered 12 significant iterations to the Polar iOS app, building a constant stream of well-thought-out features focused on driving user acquisition, retention, and happiness.
We could work at this fast pace because we shared similar product development principles: a focus on direct customer feedback and the discipline to immediately change things that weren’t working. We also held daily stand-ups (a normal part of our process) that allowed us to collaborate deeply on prototyping, usability testing, server API design, and overall product roadmap planning.
The shared vision and uncompromising focus on the customer experience yielded an app that was written about, featured in the app store, received 5 star ratings, and even served as the basis for a book.
This is a project that Rocket Insights is proud to have been part of.
Rocket Insights were ideal partners to help us build our iOS app. As CTO I appreciated their high-quality work, their dedication, and how easy they were to work and communicate with. As co-founder I appreciated that they really helped us think through our user experience and product strategy. I would highly recommend them!

Product Highlights:
1. Friction-free Voting
We worked extremely closely with the Polar design team to create an innovative, friction-free voting UI. With a single tap users vote and are immediately shown their vote and overall poll results, with the ability to scroll quickly to the next poll. This extreme ease-of-use led to amazing results: with users often voting dozens of times in a single session.
On any poll in Polar, users vote extremely quickly by tapping anywhere on the appropriate side of the screen.
After you cast a vote you are immediately shown the overall results for that poll, without any additional interaction.
You can dig into more poll details, like who voted and for what, or simply scroll to the next poll and vote.
2. Simple Poll Creation
One reason why so many polls were created with Polar is the radically simple poll creation flow. Users are presented with a poll template they can quickly fill in, taking advantage of a quick image search and other behind-the-scenes technology that kept the interface simple and clean.
Creating a poll is as easy as tapping a single button and adding information directly into a template.
Type in your poll name and choose options directly in the UI to preview how your poll will look.
Quickly and easily find relevant graphics to illustrate your poll choices with a couple taps.
